🔒 100% private: transcription runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
M4A is AAC audio in an MP4 container, the format of iPhone Voice Memos, Zoom’s audio-only recordings, and many Android recorder apps. FreeTranscribe reads M4A directly in your browser and turns speech into text with Whisper AI.
No converting to MP3 first, no upload, no account.

Frequently asked questions
Some M4A files won’t play in my browser. Will they still work?
Yes. A few M4A files use Apple Lossless (ALAC) instead of AAC, which some browsers can’t play. The built-in FFmpeg decoder handles those automatically.
Is M4A better than MP3 for transcription?
Either is fine. Accuracy depends on how clearly the voice was recorded, not on the file format.
Can I get subtitles from an M4A?
Yes. The SRT and VTT tabs give timestamped captions you can pair with a video or audiogram.
