🔒 100% private: transcription runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
AVI is an older Windows video format that browsers can’t play, so most online tools make you convert it first. FreeTranscribe includes an FFmpeg decoder that runs in your browser, so you can drop the AVI in as it is.
Good for old camcorder footage, archived interviews, screen captures, and legacy training videos.
What to expect
- The first AVI (or MKV) you transcribe downloads the decoder once, about 30 MB, and it is cached after that.
- Only the audio track is used, so the video codec (DivX, Xvid, MJPEG…) doesn’t matter.
- Old recordings with hiss or hum still work, but expect more corrections than with modern audio.
How it works
-

-

OpenAI’s Whisper model runs in your browser, so no server ever sees your file.
-
Copy or download
Plain text, or timestamped SRT and VTT subtitles ready to use anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to convert AVI to MP4 first?
No. The built-in decoder extracts the audio from the AVI directly.
My AVI has no sound. Why is the transcript empty?
The tool transcribes the audio track. Silent AVIs, common with some screen recorders, have nothing to transcribe.
Is there a size limit?
Up to 2 GB per file.
